Football update

A double game week for the Year 7 football team this week. A first round cup fixture on Monday followed by the final league match of the season, a win in the latter would guarantee the league title and an unbeaten campaign.

Firstly, our cup game vs Totteridge Academy. Mossy opened the scoring in the first minute, adding to his previous hat trick from last week. Led capably by Mr. Menzies, a rout followed, with Archer dominating the game from the first to last, securing an unassailable 5-0 lead in the first 15 minutes. Such was the strength of our boys, there was room to explore tactical flexibility during the game and still add 3 goals to make it 8-0. Alex B scored a hat trick, Mossy and Hayden scored 2 each, most importantly we kept a clean sheet. The perfect result before such a pivotal league game.

Reminiscent of the final day of 2011-2012 season, where Manchester City were aiming for their first Premier League title and needed a win against QPR, a win would also guarantee Archer their maiden league title. The boys were aware of the situation and knew a win would secure the league. I guessed it would garner a reaction from the boys and they would play well as a result. However, I was completely unprepared for what happened next. The boys stormed to a 16-0 victory, and very much looked like league champions. 10 different scorers, another hat trick for Mossy, doubles for Bruno and Alex B, a debut goal for Shlok, and a goal of the season contender from Hayden. It was quite unbelievable.

A 24-0 aggregate score this week underlines the potential of this team. Well done to everyone that has played so far, I have been impressed with your willingness to learn, dedication to playing football the right way, and understanding the importance of teamwork. There are still two cups for us to aim to win this season, let’s make it happen.
